Retailer processes for dealing with refunds may vary. In some cases, you may be asked to enter your PIN. If not, you will need to sign a receipt in the normal way.
No. For security reasons, the PIN must never be disclosed to anyone, even Barclaycard staff. If you are unable to use a PIN please contact us on 0844 811 9011* to discuss alternative methods.
If you have a Barclays debit card and you don't have a PIN, or don't know your existing PIN, contact your branch or Telephone Banking for help (the number is on your statement). If you have a Barclaycard, you will be sent your PIN (or a reminder of it) a few days before your new Chip and PIN card arrives. Because you will have to confirm your transactions with your PIN, it's more important than ever that you remember it.
You have three attempts to enter your PIN correctly. If you enter the wrong number three times running, even if it's at three separate shops or businesses, your PIN will be locked and you won't be able to use it until it's unlocked.
Simply call Customer Services on 0844 811 9111* and we will send you a reminder.
If you have a disability that makes it difficult for you to use or remember a PIN, call your card issuer for advice. If you have a Barclays debit card, contact any branch or Telephone Banking for help (the number is on your statements). If you have a Barclaycard, call 0844 811 9011*.
PIN keypads have been designed with features such as a raised dot on the number five key and have flexible leads to help customers with visual and mobility impairments.
When you go to a till point that's been converted to Chip and PIN, you should see a PIN pad - a small device with a keypad, a screen and a slot for your card. You or the shopkeeper will insert your Barclaycard into the slot in the PIN pad. You check the amount is correct on the screen and then enter your PIN instead of signing. Make sure that nobody sees you entering your PIN. You will get a receipt to check against your statement later.
As the system rolls out across the UK, you may find some stores are not set up for Chip and PIN. In these cases you should sign to confirm payment as you do currently. It's therefore important that you sign the back of your new card as soon as you receive it.
Never give your PIN out over the phone, the Internet or the post. You will pay for things over the phone, the Internet or mail order in the same way you do now - by giving out the card number on the front of your card and any security code (this is usually a three-digit code on the signature strip of your card).
Only use your PIN where you or the assistant can put your card in a Chip and PIN till or PIN pad - in a shop, restaurant, petrol station etc - or at a cash machine.
