If you're paying for goods abroad where Chip and PIN hasn't been introduced, or in the UK where retailers haven't yet upgraded, you will need to sign to confirm the transaction. It's therefore important that you sign the back of your card as soon as you receive it.

Will the PIN machine at a till take my Barclaycard if I get the number wrong three times, like at a cash machine?

No. If you type in the wrong PIN three times consecutively, your PIN will be locked. The retailer will let you keep the card, unless the card has been reported lost or stolen.
