Why is online shopping security changing?

With the new way banks are helping to protect you from fraud, we’ll sometimes need to ask you for extra information to keep your accounts secure.

Strong Customer Authentication (SCA), which is part of the new Payment Services Directive 2 (PSD2) regulations introduces a ‘2 factor’ authentication process when you pay for things online.

This means we'll no longer ask you for a password when you shop online. Instead, whenever you're asked to 'Confirm it's you' you'll be able to use one of these three ways to do it:

Use our app - it's the most secure and convenient way to do this. There are no codes, just a few taps and you’re done. It’s quick and easy to download - and it’s free. You need to be 18 or over to use the app. T&Cs apply.

By text message - We’ll send you a one-time verification code to your UK mobile number, which you then enter into the verification screen to confirm it’s you.

Using a PINsentry card reader - A PINsentry card reader generates a code to enter into the verification screen to help confirm it’s you. To use this, you’ll need to have your Barclaycard and card PIN to hand.
